Weather Update: Monsoon has been very active in the country in the month of August. There is a flood situation in Gujarat at present. In the month of August, about 16 percent more rain than normal has been recorded in the country. 253.9 mm of rain has been recorded in North-West India, which is the second highest rainfall in August since 2001. IMD gave this information on Saturday (August 1).
Regarding this, IMD Director General Mrityunjay Mahapatra said, ‘287.1 mm of rain has been recorded in the month of August. Normally, 248.1 mm of rain falls in this month. Since June 1, the country has received 749 mm of rain. Normally, 701 mm of rain falls during this time.’
Below normal rainfall in Himalayan foothills and Northeast
Giving further information, IMD Director General Mrityunjay Mohapatra said that this time the Himalayan foothills and many districts of the Northeast have received less rainfall than normal. This time the low pressure systems had moved towards the south, due to which the monsoon remained active in the south. He said that many states of the Northeast including Kerala and Vidarbha region of Maharashtra have received less rainfall.
Good rain in Tamil Nadu
This time the monsoon remained in normal condition from 10 August to 22 August. Due to which there was good rain in northern and central India, some parts of eastern India and the far southern peninsula, especially Tamil Nadu. From 23 August to 31 August the monsoon changed its direction, due to which there was heavy rain in the central and western parts of India.
IMD released an update regarding rain in September
IMD Director General Mrityunjay Mohapatra said that the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) was quite active in the second half of August, due to which there was good rainfall. This is an atmospheric disturbance that originates in tropical Africa and moves eastward. Its duration is usually 30 to 60 days. In such a situation, the country may receive more than normal rainfall in September.
Apart from this, there is a possibility of heavy rainfall in North-West India and surrounding areas. At the same time, some areas of Far North-West India, many parts of Southern Peninsula, North Bihar and North-Eastern Uttar Pradesh as well as most parts of Northeast India may receive less than normal rainfall.
